New roof work Shane's team does

From a full re-roof to a summerhouse, every new roof goes on with the same spec.

Tiled roof replacement

The full strip and re-roof: old tiles, felt and battens off, timbers checked, then breathable membrane, eave support trays, treated 25x50 battens, new tiles and dry ridge and verge. Ripley was finished in rustic red Redland 49; the Woking re-roof was stripped and done in one day.

Slate roofing

Natural slate roofs re-laid on breathable felt and new battens, with Celotex between the rafters and a dry ridge on top. The Bracknell replacement slate roof is the job to look at.

Roof refelt and batten

When the tiles are sound but the felt and battens underneath have failed, Shane strips the tiles, renews the felt and battens and puts the same tiles back. Hersham took three days with the chimney pointed too; Bagshot was a one-day emergency before solar panels went on.

Dormer roofs

Dormers rebuilt and re-clad to match the roof: rotten frame timbers replaced, cheeks re-clad or tile-hung, flat tops re-covered and new lead where the dormer meets the roof. A Wokingham customer had their dormers re-clad alongside a full re-roof.

How Shane does it

A new roof, the McDermott way

Shane gets on the roof and in the loft before he quotes. If a repair will do, he says so. If the battens are rotten and the felt has perished, he shows you the photos and quotes the re-roof, often with two or three options so you can choose the tile and the spec.

Then the team scaffold, strip and rebuild, and clear the old roof away as they go. Reviewers mention finishing on schedule or early, tidy sites and good communication at the end of each day.

Around Woking

New roofs across Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire

Shane's new roofs include a one-day re-roof in Woking, rustic red Redland 49 in Ripley, slate in Bracknell, a dormer house in Church Crookham finished before Christmas, plus Farnham, Farnborough and Mytchett. Checkatrade reviews add new roofs in Frimley, Addlestone, Chertsey, Camberley, Egham and Wokingham.

Layer by layer

What goes into a McDermott new roof

Tap through the layers. It is the spec Shane lists on his own re-roof posts, in order.

  1. Shane checks every rafter once the old roof is off. Rotten or split timbers are replaced or sistered before anything goes back on.

Corrected joists come first on his Ripley new roof, before the Celotex and boarding.

  2. Rigid Celotex boards between the rafters, cut to leave the airflow the roof needs.

His words on the Bracknell slate roof: Celotex insulation with corrected airflow.

  3. High quality breathable felt across the rafters. It sheds any water that gets past the tiles and lets moisture out of the loft.

Condensation in the loft rots battens from the inside. Breathable felt stops it.

  4. A rigid tray at the eaves so the felt never sags into the gutter and holds a puddle.

Sagging felt at the eaves is where most old roofs rot first.

  5. New treated timber battens, 25x50, fixed at the gauge the tile maker sets.

Old roofs often have thin, untreated battens that split when tiles are walked on.

  6. Concrete interlocking tiles, clay or natural slate. The Ripley roof went on in rustic red Redland 49 tiles.

Matched to the house and the street, never the cheapest tile on the yard.

  7. Mechanically fixed dry verge caps along the gable ends instead of mortar.

Mortar verges crack and drop out. Dry verge stays put.

  8. Ridge tiles screwed down over a ventilated dry ridge roll, no mortar bedding to crack.

"I had leaks in all areas of my house due to ridge failure ... not one single issue" (Checkatrade, Brookwood).

  9. New uPVC fascias and soffits and fresh guttering finish the eaves on most re-roofs.

Re-roofs carry Shane's 25-year guarantee, as stated in his posts.

New roof, 1920s house

Shane was quick to respond and came round , gave an honest estimate for the work. His guys did the work on schedule and completed everything as described. There was no issues and Shane didn’t let us down…quite rare these days that people actually do what they say they will and don’t screw you over! He really does care that you’re looked after. So a very positive experience and would recommend him to anyone looking for a new roof.

Full Refoof

Asked for help about a leak in the roof and once the works started found the roof was in a far worse state than thought. Shane gave me 3 options and talked me through the pros and cons of both. We decided to go for the full roof and I am so glad we did. They worked super fast and it looks amazing, they also reclad our dormers to match the new roof and replaced gutters and soffits. They needed to remove the solar panels to do the work but Shane organised this. There has been a problem with getting them running again but Shane has been very responsive to messages and is fixing the issue.

New roof questions

How much does a new roof cost in Woking?

McDermott customers reported £14,400 to £17,600 for a new roof on a 1920s house in Frimley, £17,200 to £21,200 for another Frimley new roof and £18,000 to £22,000 for a full re-roof with dormer cladding, gutters and soffits in Wokingham. Your price depends on size, pitch, tile and scaffold, so Shane quotes after he has seen it.

How long does a re-roof take?

A straightforward re-roof can be stripped and finished in a day, as the Woking job in January 2026 was. Larger roofs take a week or so. Shane tells you the timescale with the quote, and reviewers say the team finish on schedule or early.

What guarantee do I get?

Shane gives a 25-year guarantee on re-roofs, as stated in his own posts. Ask for the written guarantee with your invoice.

Do I need planning permission for a new roof?

Re-roofing like for like does not need planning permission on most houses. Listed buildings, conservation areas and changes to the shape or material are different. Shane tells you if your job needs checking with the council.

Thinking about a new roof?

Shane looks at the roof and the loft, tells you straight whether you need one and gives you the options in writing.
