Slipped or cracked tiles

Failed ridge or verge mortar
Cracked mortar lets wind-driven rain into the top of the roof, which shows up as a stain on a top-floor ceiling.
Lifted lead flashing
Where the roof meets a wall or chimney the lead seals the joint. Once it lifts, water runs down the wall inside.
Split or blocked valleys
Valleys take the water from two slopes. A split, or a pile of leaves and moss, floods them in a downpour.

Why does my roof only leak in heavy rain?
Light rain drains off before it finds the gap. Heavy, wind-driven rain gets pushed under tiles, through cracked ridge mortar or behind lifted flashings. That pattern points Shane to the exposed parts of the roof first.
The stain is in the middle of the ceiling. Is the hole right above it?
Rarely. Water runs down the felt and along rafters before it drips, so the gap can be a metre or more away. That is why Shane checks the loft before the roof.
Can a leak be fixed without replacing the roof?
Most can. A slipped tile, a failed flashing or a cracked ridge is a repair. Shane only recommends a new roof when the felt and battens have failed across the whole roof, and he shows you why.
